Our customers are some of the 263 million people living in India who don’t have access to reliable power and connectivity. They are 70% male and 30% female. They range in age between 18 and 40, with the large majority being between 21 and 28 years old. They work full-time jobs, either as farmers, as manual labourers on building sites or as service workers in the local economy.
To get connected, the majority of our customers use feature phones, like the Nokia 1000 range. However, an increasingly large portion of our customers - 45% - are using smartphones to connect to the cellular network and access data services. We anticipate, that within the next three years, 80% of our customers will own smartphones that are 3G and Wi-Fi enabled.
Our customers want the same thing we all do - a long, happy life. During their life, they want to provide for their family and improve their economic prospects and the opportunities available to their children.
Having uninterrupted access to the cellular network is a big part of helping our customers lead a productive life. A fully-charged phone can allow them to do everything from source better stock for their stores, to connect with their relatives in an emergency. Increasingly, our customers also want access to the internet so they can find information, transact with others and be entertained.
